Q: do people detail there cars in chicago?
i want to open a detailing shop by summer in the evanston area or north of the city

A: Most people don’t bother with car detailing. Cars tend to sit outside and suffer from lack of cleaning and care. Some people do regularly wash or have their car(s) washed at a local car wash.

I would think that there are enough potential customers to keep busy and make some profit after a year or so. I would think that this is the best time to start that kind of business. Winter is fast approaching and time is the enemy. I always think of Veterans’ Day as the end of Fall and any chance of good weather by then. Our car(s) should be ready for snow, sleet, rain and road de-icers.

I had 1 car detailed and clay barred and hand waxed last week.

Winter is also a busy time. You will stay busy hand washing and vacuuming the interior. Your crew should keep busy with cleaning, waxing and detailing all year.

I have been lately going to a mechanical car wash with hand drying. The guy also has a separate garage with a heater used for detailing, waxing, etc. He has 4 or 5 workers.

Q: At what interval do North American train cars need to have their wheels replaced?
I had a meeting with a company that makes train wheels. Additionally, I often see flat bed rail cars near Chicago carrying a double stack of train wheels on axels. This has me wondering, just how often do rail cars need their wheels replaced?

A: Wheels are replaced only when they become damaged by flat spots or thermal cracks from sliding on the rail.

The FRA requires freight cars to under go a thorough inspection every ten years. This info is displayed on the side of the car as its “COTS” (Cleaned, Oiled, Tested and Stenciled) date. Watch as cars pass next time and you’ll see it, usually found in the big black square bordered in white, along with other car details.

At fifty years, the cars must be retired and then they make their final trip destined to the cutter’s torch.

Q: Do you know of any good national transporters for cars?
I want a reliable and affordable transporter to ship my car from Chicago to San Jose, Cali. Do you know of any good ones and about how much it might cost?

A: Try these guys. I used them twice.
A to Z Auto Shipping, Inc
31230 Cedar Valley Drive, Suite 202
Westlake Village, Ca 91362
(818)991-9904
I’ll tell you that from San Luis Obispo, Ca (not that far from San Jose) to Flagstaff, Az was $650.00 for each vehicle.

Q: What are the cost of having a car living in chicago?
I ask because im moving there in a couple of months and I have two cars…..should i get rid of one?
I have a sports car and an SUV…..I will be living in downtown chicago….

A: Yearly it’s $75 for a city sticker and $78 for a state sticker. $90 for a city sticker if you own an SUV.

If you live in a residential neighborhood you can park on the street for free. If you live in an area with high rises and no parking garage be prepared to spend lots of time looking for a parking spot.

I live in a residential area and pay $1100.00 a year for insurance on a 2004 Saturn, which isn’t bad, but I have a policy with el cheapo insurance agency. Gas right now is about 2.30 a gallon.

Q: what’s the safest place in Chicago for long term parking?
I’m driving from Canada to Chicago in September, and then taking the train to Albuquerque. I’ll need to leave my car in Chicago for two weeks. I’m thinking about the parking lots at the train station or at Midway airport. Price and distance (to the trains) are not the issues, safety is. Could anyone help me?

A: If it were me, I would use the Union Station parking facility which is located directly across Jackson Street to the south of Union Station. This facility has 500 short term & 500 long term parking spaces, 24 hour security and is connected to Union Station at the concourse level. Q: Where can I find a Nissan skyline r34 in Chicago?
This car is the most beautiful thing I’ve seen, and I want to know where I can find this car in Chicago, and what’s the cost for it? I heard 60k and up.

A: Not to be a smartass or anything Jeff (& i’m not sure if regulations have changed recently), but we have affiliate car club members in Calif./TX/FL/GA/AZ/MA with street legal skylines. These cars are at major car shows, drift meets, etc. I know you’re a nissan tech, but we’ve been stopped BY THE COPS on & off the street simply to admire the cars. Yes gray market cars are seized & either liquidated outside of the country or otherwise disposed of, but there are quite a number of street legal skylines out here. (NOTE: you will pay a kings ransom literally to get a current Skyline owner to part with it!!) 2 of the Skylines are tagged outside the continental US. 1 from the USVI (that’s US virgin Islands) & the other is tagged in Puerto Rico also US. Both owners are fulltime students & with laws in their current residing states, & can keep their out of state DL/Tags as long as they are enrolled in/attending school. As a footnote, I’ve heard of a few guys who claimed (unconfirmed) to have installed Skyline motors into Nissan 240’s??
From a previous post.
You can, most commonly via the West coast/Calif. You maybe required to change certain parts in the cars emission system But all JDM cars are not seized & deported/destroyed once discovered. Explain all the Skyline’s running around Calif., Mexico & Canada. Both of which are entry points one may consider if a US port delivery is too much red tape.

Q: Is there any Car Rental places in Chicago that will let you rent a car if you are 19 ?
I have to go to Great Lakes IL to see my fiancee graduate from Navy Bootcamp. I am only 19 yrs old and all car rental places say you have to be 21! I don’t know if there is always going to be taxi’s around soo renting a car would be easier. Any1 know of a place close to the Chicago O’Hare airport that rents cars where u have to be 21?!

A: If you’re under 21, your chances of renting from the big companies are just about nil unless you’re a military or government employee. You might try rent-a-wreck, they will rent to 18 and over at certain branches. They do have a branch in Chicago so I would try them.

Q: Where do the Chicago White Sox players park their cars?

A: Lol probably in the VIP parking lot.

Q: Are There Cable Cars in Chicago??
If there are, do they still run??
So, there’s a subway???

So, if I wanted to go to Grant Park so I could see the Buckingham Fountain, I could take the L??

A: yeah of course why not

Q: Free cars in Chicago area?
I need a car. I can afford to drive one, but not buy one at this time. Are there places with very low monthly payments, or something similar? I have a Pontiac Bonneville that seems to have a broken right rear stablizer bar. Could place like a high school or auto shop training school fix it for me for free?

A: You could try that, sure. But, have you tried Craigs list yet? Might want to consider that too.
